Snowflake Challenge 2019 | Day 6 - Fannish Wishlist

Prompt: In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Being used to small fandoms and creating all the content, my fannish wishlists tend to be more like to-do lists these days. One of my greatest fannish wishes is for tokusatsu fandom to have another active, thriving kink meme - a wish that no individual fan can fulfill alone.

Throughout the years, the fandom has had multiple Kamen Rider/Super Sentai/Ultraman/General tokusatsu kink memes that rarely stayed active for long unlike the long-running franchises of the source materials themselves. Below is my wishlist for the running of a new kink meme that could potentially last for a year or two.

Tokusatsu Kink Meme Wishlist

(01) Hosted on Dreamwidth with detailed tutorials on how kink memes work. Topics for the meta/tutorials can include: Tracking DW threads, writing short vs detailed prompts, writing short & satisfying fills etc. So newer fans can take advantage of the platform's features (that AO3 doesn't have) and be braver about writing prompts/creating fills.

(02) Top level threads with titles of each show. To allow tracking of the shows that you're interested in prompting and filling for.

(03) An associated AO3 Collection and Twitter account for notifications of new fills. For continuous promotion of the kink meme and fics created for it.

(04) Chat post for discussion of kinks and how to write/draw them. A free-for-all space to ask for help on the technical details and share recs of existing fics/art that focuses on niche kinks to learn from them.

(05) Affiliation with fanwork exchanges. I've been thinking that it's a waste that many cool and delicious requests in exchanges have been left unfilled, so why not reuse them as prompts for a kink meme? Plus as the requests for exchanges roll out, the kink meme may be a good avenue for practicing writing/drawing certain characters/ships. This way, the fanwork exchanges and kink meme can work in tandem to create a healthy fanwork ecosystem.

There's the additional problems of acquisition of canonical material and that the adaptations Stateside have not necessarily encouraged seeking the originals.

That said, any given Rider or Sentai series is often hit or miss on liking it enough to go through all the way with it.

I am very much here for more open discussions about ship and kink positivity! Especially if it might entice some people to be more visible with their work.

I've noticed that fans who've finished multiple older and less popular shows (before Gokaiger) tend to also be fans of Power Rangers! The American adaptations may have gotten viewers used to the particular tropes/pacing of these longer shows and create more fans of both SS and PR.

Very true about each series often being hit or miss. Life's too short to be a toku completionist.

I've just noticed that you've listed Kamen Rider and Super Sentai as your interests. May I ask which shows are you interested in? :D

There is that. I watched Power Rangers early on, and probably should go back and see what I missed, but it was fascinating to see the Super Sentai shows that would then be adapted into Power Rangers.

I think my earliest Kamen Rider was Den-O, and that's a really good series to start on. Then I was consistent through Fourze, anf I fell out at Gaim, apparently right before it went dark. Recently, I've picked up Ghost (another good series) and Ex-Aid, but haven't done Build yet.

I started Super Sentai at Shikenger, and was consistent to Go-Busters, I think, And I haven't picked the new stuff up again, but I was also hoping to go all the way through Zyuranger and compare notes with the first season of Power Rangers.

And also Akibaranger, but good kids don't watch that show.

It has been equally fascinating to see how the Sentai gets adapted into its PR version. I'm 8 episodes into Time Force and I get the sense that the PR writers have benefited from using the entirety of Timeranger as a reference for more tightly interlocking the character arcs and plot points.

Ghost and Ex-Aid are great! If you're keen on going back to Sentai, I can let you know which post-Go-Busters series are likely to suit your taste :D Would like to know your thoughts if you do decide to compare Zyuranger with MMPR; I've been looking out for explicit comparisons of PR and SS (by unbiased fans) ever since checking out a few eps of Linkara's History of Power Rangers. It's a pity that afaik Linkara isn't planning on going through SS series.

Have you watched Kanpai Senshi After V? It's another SS parody like Akibaranger. It's like how SS tropes would play out in the sitcom genre and has the best evil blue ranger arc of all Sentai (I'm serious).

I haven't got all of Zyuranger nor Power Rangers to make comparisons with, so that would have to be rectified first. And I wanted to be more of a completionist with Sentai shows at least after that, but if there are good ones before, too, those would be lovely to figure out how to obtain. I can't claim to be unbiased, but I can certainly try.

I would like to hop back in to Sentai, absolutely, so suggest away!

I haven't seen Kanpai Senshi After V, but with that description, it sounds like it would be right up my alley.

Do you need a somewhat coherent plot and worldbuilding in your Sentais? Or are you happy with mostly watching the cast have whacky adventures and grow together?

Since you've watched Shinkenger and Go-busters (and KR Den-O), it seems like you find it easier to complete shows written by head writer Kobayashi Yasuko. Do correct me if I'm wrong!

I like both of those options, having liked both Den-O and Decade.

I am so very casual a fan that I didn't even know the head writer of either series. So let's say yes to that and see where it goes!

Recs for Sentai that comes after Go-Busters:

Ressha Sentai Toqger - This one has the same head writer as Shinkenger, Go-Busters and Den-O. The theme is trains and celebrating children's power of imagination. Lots of adorable characters and a Sixth who used to be on the same side as the villains. He loves kittens! <3

Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger - This one mixes up the formula by featuring two competing teams of thief and police with Sixth being a double agent for both teams. While the show can get angsty and heavy due to the thieves having lost their loved ones and trying to get them back through 'stealing,' there's plenty of comedic episodes featuring classic Sentai humor tropes - crossdressing, getting turned back into kids etc.

Recs for older Sentai with engaging plots:

Choujuu Sentai Liveman - The sentai trio squares off against three of their former friends who have turned to the dark side. Yellow's actor is also the actor for Tenkuuji Takeru's dad.

Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger - The second Dinosaurs sentai! One of the most plot-driven Sentais in my opinion due to the anti-hero Sixth and Black being a woobie. The Sentai version of Power Rangers Dino Thunder.
