g_uavaRecently, I got a sketchbook and thought of drawing the design of Ken's apron since it resembles the royalty-free clipart uploaded on irasutoya that seem simple enough to copy. Collecting reference images and creating a gifset of scenes featuring Ken in his apron got me noticing the quirky variety of food, ingredients and cooking utensils in the design of Ken's apron.
What's included on Ken's apron, from top to bottom:
- 1 strawberry shortcake
- 2 onigiri
- 1 egg in an egg holder
- 1 omelette rice covered in ketchup
- 1 set of fork, knife and spoon
- 1 small saucepan with three sausages
- 1 carrot
- 2 cucumbers
- 4 strawberries
We have here iconic Japanese food and ingredients commonly used in popular Japanese dishes along with the tools for cooking and eating. Whenever Ken wears his apron, its unique design adds some colour to the scene that reflects the fun he takes in cooking and his comfort in making himself at home in Exceedraft's office by making food in the cooking area. The colourful apron supports Ken's characterisation as the youngest of the main Exceedraft trio with a bright and cheerful personality. The apron's variety of food and utensils also matches Ken's various talents in karate, long-distance running and of course cooking.
Wearing the apron covers up part of Ken's regular outfit and visually distances him from his public role as a member of an elite police rescue unit. Scenes of Ken cooking and wearing his apron also coincide with him being more childlike in offering comic relief or expressing his personal feelings and appearing less like a serious professional. Those same scenes also feature his teammates behaving less seriously, and it's as if Ken's presence influences them to express a variety of emotions that's like the variety in his apron's design which keeps the Exceedraft office from being a sterile work environment.
I've really been thinking a lot about the clothes and costume design in Exceedraft...I should get on with writing more analyses and gathering images to complement them, but mostly I just want to lie down and spread my arms and legs out in a '大' while letting my thoughts roll around in my head lol.
